Chapter Three

Vlad

Like it wasn't bad enough that I already had a mad crush on the gorgeous wolf, he had to go and prove himself to be brave and chivalrous, too? Life just wasn't fair sometimes!

Once we had shaken off Don and settled into a booth in the pub, I'd enjoyed myself so much that I'd even forgotten to be nervous. When I couldn't decide what sounded good, Jackal had taken charge and ordered an assortment of appetizers for us to share. Then he'd entertained me with stories of some of the stranger cases that the Blood Valley pack had investigated. The best part, though, was that Jackal seemed to be a very physical being. He punctuated his stories with small touches on my arms and hands and, for one breath-stealing moment, laid his hand on my upper thigh which caused me to choke on my tea which, in turn, caused him to reposition that hand to pound on my back until I stopped choking.

Long after Jackal had delivered me back to the werewolves' home, I was lying on the bed in the tiny guesthouse they'd been gracious enough to set me up in, unable to sleep. Instead, I was fantasizing about a particular wolf with black hair and teasing green eyes.

The moon was full, shining down to cover everything in golden rays, and I finally gave up on sleeping and decided to go for a walk. I'd only made it a few steps when a sound behind me told me that I wasn't alone. Turning quickly, I was startled to find Jackal walking up behind me.

"I thought you were gone?" I said, instantly regretting the less than warm welcome. "I mean, I'm surprised to see you."

He laughed, his eyes twinkling in the moonlight. "I know what you meant. I was doing some research in Clint's office and saw you come outside. I just wanted to be sure you were okay." His face sobered. "After the scare earlier."

A scare? Oh, right, that puss-bucket at the bar before my knight-in-shining-armor came to my rescue. I almost laughed at Jackal thinking I was worried about that when, in reality, I'd been thinking of all the filthy ways I'd like to repay him for chasing Don off.

"I'm all right," Without thinking, I reached out to stroke his arm. He didn't shake me off. "I was actually thinking about how amazing you were," I admitted quietly. "No one has ever done anything like that for me before." To my surprise, the rugged wolf in front of me blushed.

"It was nothing," Jackal argued lightly, looking up at the luminous moon. "Will you be around tomorrow? We – Barry and I – might have more questions for you while we try and sort out your paperwork."

"Of course," I agreed, immediately abandoning my half-formed plan to see the new sci-fi thriller that had just hit the theater in town. After all, it wasn't like When Humans Attack was going away anytime soon.

"I better get going. Miles to go and all that," Jackal said with a laugh, and I couldn't help but smile with him.
